Skincare for Beginners: What Order to Apply Skincare Products

The instructions on your favorite shampoo bottle couldn’t be clearer: lather, rinse, repeat. Why is figuring out what order to apply your skincare products so much more complicated?

In addition to being the largest organ in the human body, your skin is super complex. The majority of the time, it serves as a barrier, keeping nasty things (like dirt and bacteria) out. During your skincare routine, you want it to do the opposite!

Your mission is to encourage your skin to hang tight to moisture and absorb those nourishing ingredients. That’s why the order you put on skincare products is so critical to achieving the healthiest skin possible. Once you nail the order, however, you’ll be experiencing an internal glow like no other!

What’s the Correct Order of Skincare Products?

The RYT Method of skincare involves applying four gentle products during your daily skincare routine. Each one contains natural, vegan, and organic ingredients that boost your overall health, a key to life-long beauty and wellness. For spectacular results, apply the products in the order below.

Step One: Facial Cleanser

The first step in any skincare routine is a great cleanser.

We advise that you use a gentle, antioxidant-rich cleanser with natural exfoliants. They will help remove makeup and impurities. The best cleansers will even balance your skin’s oil production.
Cleansers rid your skin of dirt and pollution that can clog pores. If your pores are clogged, other nourishing ingredients can’t penetrate the skin. Plus, clogged pores can contribute to breakouts and dehydration, signs of poor skin health.

Step Two: Facial Toner

The second step in your skincare routine should be facial toner. A toner works along with your cleanser to further cleanse and balance your skin. The goal is to plump up your skin cells to boost hydration. Well-hydrated skin slows down sebum production, which helps keep things in balance.

Applying toner ensures you’ve removed all of the impurities that managed to sneak their way into your skin. It keeps pores open so they’re ready for the next two steps, which require absorption.

Step Three: Facial Serum

The next step in The RYT method skincare routine is facial serum. This step gives your skin a boost of hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E to nourish and hydrate the skin.

Remember that well-hydrated skin maintains balance and is less likely to overproduce oils and sebum. Applying serum after toner and before your hydrator ensures that the vitamins can penetrate while your pores are ready for absorption.

Step Four: Facial Hydrator

The final step in this four-step routine is facial hydrator! Although your serum will add a lot of moisture, think of your hydrator as a way to lock it in. Your hydrator will protect your skin from both stress and UV radiation.

Hydrator is the thickest product, which is why we recommend applying it last. As a general rule, a great skincare routine starts with the lightest product and increases from there.
